Hyderabad, February 23: The government is considering an amendment to the Education Act, 1982 for regulating engineering colleges and colleges offering other professional courses, Higher Education Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha disclosed during Question Hour in the Legislative Council on Tuesday.
Replying to supplementaries by Mr. Ch. Sitaramulu CPI(M), Y.B.Rajendra Prasad (TDP), R.Padmaraju (Congress) about action taken on colleges which did not comply with AICTE norms in providing infrastructure and other standards, the Minister said at present State government did not have regulatory powers.
He explained that the AICTE would give permission to set up colleges and the university concerned would inspect it for the amenities and send a report for action. State as of now has no power to take direct action and hence the proposed Bill.
