Bid to smuggle heroin from Pakistan to China foiled

Islamabad, August 16:Chinese authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle around 560 kg of heroin through the Pakistan border into China, a media report said.

The heroin was found concealed in rice containers at the Sost land port in Gilgit-Baltistan, and China reported the matter to the Pakistani customs department, sources told Dawn News.

The report, however, did not mention when the incident took place.

Another source in the customs department said Chinese officials had earlier seized 10 kg of heroin on the same route, but they did not report the case to Pakistan, apparently because of the lesser quantity of the contraband.

The source alleged that there were a few officers in the department office in Rawalpindi who wanted postings and transfers to land ports.

Pakistan’s bilateral trade with China reached $5.5 billion in 2009-10 from over $3 billion in 2004-05 after signing the Free Trade Agreement in November 2006.
