Ahmedabad, April 26: Anti-nuclear activists from Bhavnagar district will tomorrow launch a public awareness campaign in about 30 villages against a proposed nuclear plant.

The Bhavnagar Zila Gram Bachao Samiti (BZGBS) has been opposing the proposed 6,000 MW nuclear plant in Mithivirdi of Talaja taluka in Bhavnagar since last four years and has been organising awareness campaigns from time to time since 2007.

The anti-nuke drive to be launched tomorrow, marking 25 years of Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and also in the backdrop of health hazards arising on radiation leak from the Japan”s Fukushima nuclear plant.

“Nearly 30 villages around Mithivirdi, the proposed site for the 6,000 MW nuclear reactor by NPCIL, will be covered as part of the public awareness campaign. We are going to launch the drive for creating awareness among common people on hazards of the nuclear plants,” Bharat Jaambocha, a member of BZGBS said.

The locals had on the earlier occasions opposed attempts made by the authorities to conduct soil tests of the proposed site.
