Bharani to institute award for budding poets

Hyderabad, April 15: There are many poets in the state who are not able to get their poems published or get recognition and they must be encouraged and felicitated, said Tanikella Bharani, actor, writer and short-film director.

“These days, there is no encouragement for poets. I want to support young writers. All good poets should be felicitated,” Bharani said during a press conference on Thursday, organised by the Kala Foundation.

Bharani said he would institute an award titled Tanikella Bharani Sahitya Puraskaram from July 14 (his birthday), from this year, which would honour the best poet of the year. He added they would call entries for the award by end-May and then a jury would shortlist a name from the best book of poetry. “We will felicitate the best poet by giving an award of `50,000 and new clothes,’’ he said.

Kala Founation founder and managing trustee Sanjay Kishore informed there was no age limit for entries. The copy of poetry should be more 50 pages long and has to be published between Jan 2009 and April 2011. He requested aspirants to send their copies to 6-1-69/5A, Saifabad, Hyderabad-500004.

Tollywood comedian Padmasri Dr Brahmanandam said, “Bharani loves all forms of art and particularly poetry. He is himself a good poet. By felicitating fellow poets, he will in a way award himself.”

Former Animal Husbandry minister Mandali Buddha Prasad praised Bharani for his initiative to encourage young writers.
