Kathmandu [Nepal]: Nepal’s incumbent President Bidhya Devi Bhandari has been elected for a second term, extending the tenure of the Himalayan country’s first female head of state for another five years.
According to the Election Commission of Nepal (ECP), President Bhandari of the Left Alliance garnered 39,275 votes. Her competitor, Laxmi Rai of the opposition Nepali Congress party secured 11,730 votes.
With this President Bhandari is the first President of federal Nepal. She is also the first Nepali woman to be elected as the country’s president twice.
The voting which begun from 10 a.m. in the office of the Election Commission of Nepal (ECP) in Kathmandu ended at 3 p.m.
The Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal (RJP-N) and the Federal Socialist Forum Nepal (FSFN) who went on a marathon protest demanding the amendment in the country’s constitution recently, voted for President Bhandari in the elections. (ANI)
