Bhaiya duj celebration fills brothers, sisters with joy

New Delhi, October 19: With bhaiya duj being celebrated across the country, the special occasion, which is dedicated to the bond of auspicious relationship between brothers and sisters, have filled them with joy.

This is special day for brothers and sisters when sisters apply a tilak on the forehead of their brothers, celebrating the festival. In India, every celebration or festival has a story behind it. According to the Hindu Mythology, Lord Yamraj, the God of Death, went to his sister Yamuna on the Shukla Paksha Dwitiya day in the month of Kartik. A rousing and hearty welcome was given to him by his sister Yamuna.

Applying a tilak on his forehead, her sister carried out aarti, and prettified his neck with a gorgeous attractive garland. Some scrumptious food was cooked by her for her brother. All this pleased Yamraj who gave her a boon and blessings, saying that whenever a brother will go to his sister’s home on this occasion, prosperity of health an wealth will be with him. Therefore, the Bhayya Duj is also called as Yam-Dwitiya’.

On this auspicious occasion, dressed in new attires sisters apply a tilak on the foreheads of their brothers and do aarati. The sisters also sweeten their brothers’ mouth. Brothers also present some valuable gifts to their sisters.

This is also called Bhai Dooj in northern part, Bhav-Bij in Maharashtra, Bhai-Phota in eastern part, including Bengal.
