NEW DELHI: Washington Post’s senior editor hits out at BJP leader Vijay Chauthaiwale for calling newspaper’s editorial policy of being “highly-biased” and “agenda-driven”.
Taking to her Twitter handle, the billionaire Jeff Bezos-owned The Washington Post‘s global opinions editor Eli Lopez tweeted:
“Just to clarify: Jeff Bezos doesn’t tell Washington Post journalists what to write. Independent journalism is not about charming governments. But there’s no question the work of our correspondents and columnists fits within India’s democratic traditions,” Lopez tweeted.
Retweeting Amazon CEO Bezos’ “Dynamism. Energy. Democracy. #IndianCentury” post on Twitter earlier this week, Chauthaiwale, chief of the BJP’s foreign affairs department, had on Thursday tweeted:
“Please tell this to your employees in Washington DC. Otherwise, your charm offensive is likely to be a waste of time and money”.
The criticism coincided with Bezos’ visit to India earlier this week during which he had announced that the company plans to invest $1 billion in the country.
However, it drew a sharp response from Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal who said: “It’s not as if they are doing a great favor to India.”
Despite this, Bezos announced that the e-commerce giant will create 10 lakh new jobs in India by 2025 through continued investments in technology, infrastructure, and its logistics network.
