After a hectic day a warm glass of milk before sleep is all that you need. But you must know that food safety experts have revealed that 68% of the milk contains detergent & harmful matter. it has been found that unscrupulous vendors use adulterants like detergent, urea and soda. an affidavit was filed by the centre in an ongoing public interest litigation in the Supreme Court in which the government admitted that the bulk of milk supplied by vendors across the country is either contaminated or adulterated. It also stated that even packaged milk in some parts of the country is below standard.
Food safety authorities examined the samples from across the country and found that over 68 per cent of the samples have been found to be of substandard quality. Shockingly traces of detergent were also found in some samples. Apart from this water, glucose and skimmed milk powder were also used for adulteration.
Dr Vinod Kansal, a leading dairy expert said, usually milk is collected by vendors in unhygienic conditions and then stored for long durations. All this increases the chances of lowering milk quality and results in bacterial contamination. In order to prevent milk from getting spoiled in summer season, milkmen add urea or soda, which are very harmful for humans.
The government analysis revealed that over 66 per cent of samples not conforming to standards were non- packaged samples while 33 per cent were packaged milk. The study was conducted across India.
