Hyderabad, February 19: Central government can install an automatic phone tapping system to tap phones which it feels necessary to be supervised.
Cabinet committee on security has recommended new regulations on phone tapping under which the tapping responsibility will be given to service providers. It is said in a report that a centralized monitoring system will tap the phones. Though the details have not become clear but it is likely that this system would be implemented from 2013.
It is said in the report that this proposal has come as an aftermath of the conversation between Niira Radia and Samajwadi party leader Amar Singh has become public.
It has been alleged that government is tapping nearly one lakh phones which is termed by BJP as a matter of concern.
The proposal also said “As the proposal is related to national security, public accountability is not relevant”, which means that government can listen and tap your phone calls any time in the name national security.
The proposal is seen by many as an invasion to privacy of citizens.
