Hyderabad, July 02: The city is all set to witness a galaxy of eminent scientists and research scholars discussing the latest developments in the field of science and technology for the next three days. About 350 renowned scientists and teachers from India and abroad are participating in the platinum jubilee meeting of the prestigious Indian Academy of Sciences to be held at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology from July 2 to 4.
Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) director Lalji Singh will deliver a special lecture on ‘genetic diversity in Indian populations’, while Surendra Prasad of Indian Institute of Technology-New Delhi will address the gathering on ‘Very highspeed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) technology’ during the three-day event. Renowned historian Narendra Luther will talk on ‘the history and heritage of the twin cities’. A talk on ‘Life sciences in the service of the soldier’ will be given by Defence Research and Development Organisation (New Delhi) chief controller W Selvamurthy.
Two symposia on ‘Darwin and Evolution’ and ‘Rock Art in India’, lectures by scholars from other fields, and sessions for science teachers also will be part of the event. The Indian Academy of Sciences is organising the event in association with the CCMB, the IICT, the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI).
Addressing the mediapersons here on Wednesday, the Academy president D Balasubramanian said that the meeting is a curtain raiser for the platinum jubilee year celebrations of the Indian Academy of Sciences established by Nobel Laureate C V Raman in 1934. “We have two meetings every year and this event is the mid-year meeting. The annual meeting of the platinum jubilee year will be held at Bangalore in November this year,” said Balasubramanian.
