Betting blues: Man loses wife’s jewellery, commits suicide

Hyderabad: A 27-year-old businessman committed suicide after he lost his wife’s gold jewellery in cricket betting on Thursday at Pet Basheerabad.

As reported by TOI Ghanshyam, a resident of MN Reddy Nagar in Pet Basheerabad ran a grocery store at Bapuji Nagar in Bowenpally along with his father Duga Ram. He hails from Rajasthan and had migrated to Hyderabad along with the family a few decades ago.

On Wednesday night, Ghanshyam and his family went to attend a relative’s wedding. Ghanshyam returned home at midnight prior to his family.

When his family returned home in the wee hours of Thursday, they found Ghanshyam hanging from the ceiling fan with a bed sheet. A suicide note was recovered from the bedroom, which said “Mere suicide ka ek hi reason hai… woh meri buri adat hai betting ki. Mere Maut ke piche sirf betting hi hai.”

According to police sources Ghanshyam got married on April 28 and in addition to losing his own money he also lost the jewellery of his wife in cricket betting. Ghanshyam is said to have lost 280 grams of gold jewellery belonging to his wife in betting. The pressure to bring the gold jewellery back increased as his wife has to wear them at another wedding in a few days, which led him to commit suicide.
