Bengaluru-based portal gets timeline from Home Ministry on Bezbaruah report to curb racial violence

Bengaluru-based wb portal Jhatkaa.org delivered thousands of petition signatures to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday demanding a timeline for the implementation of the Bezbaruah Report to curb racial violence.

In response to the increasing number of racially motivated attacks against North Eastern people over the past two months, campaigning NGO Jhatkaa.org met with Ajay Kanojia, Deputy Director, Northeast Division, Ministry of Home Affairs to urge for a clear timeline around the implementation of the Bezbaruah Report, the portal said in a press release.

Kanojia said, “Our six months for implementation of immediate recommendations begins on 11th January…Education reforms have already started CBSE, NCERT, we’re doing it all” and added, “it’s very good that you [Jhatkaa.org] have started putting pressure on us from now. This puts constant pressure on us to fulfil the promises and statements we made.”

“This commitment to a clear timeline around the report’s implementation by the Home Ministry is an important step forward for racial equality in this country.” Executive Director, Deepa Gupta says, “With multiple attacks on North East people in the last month alone, we citizens need to make sure that all possible measures are taken to curb racial violence-and the implementation of the Bezbaruah report is a crucial first step.”

This is the second meeting Jhatkaa.org has had with the Home Ministry on racial violence. Armed with over 1500 petition signatures, Jhatkaa.org volunteers met with the Ministry on 3 November to call on the Government to take action. Just a couple of hours after Jhatkaa.org met with them, the Home Ministry gave all States four days to identify how they will implement the Bezbaruah report-so that they could submit a comprehensive plan of action to the Delhi High Court.
