Bengaluru, Nov. 12 : Karnataka Chief Minister K. Siddaramaiah on Thursday confirmed that Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport would not be renamed after 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan.
“Govt is not changing the name of KempeGowda Intl Airport to #TipuSultan airport,” Karnataka Chief Minister’s official twitter handle said.
Earlier, noted playwright Girish Karnad had drawn a major flak for suggesting that the Bengaluru Airport be named after Tipu Sultan. Karnad also received a death threat following his suggestion.
Karnad, who participated in ‘Tipu Jayanti’ celebrations, was threatened that he would meet the same end as writer M M Kalburgi, who was killed recently.
The right wing groups such as VHP and Bajrang Dal are protesting against the celebration of birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan in Karnataka. These extremist groups are accusing Tipu Sultan, who fought against colonial rulers, as being communal. (ANI)
