The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy has taken a decision to compile a Beary-Kannada-English dictionary, at a consultation meeting here on June 10.
According to Prof. B. A. Vivek Rai, a Kannada and Tulu scholar, the first Beary-Kannada-English dictionary could be out within two years.
“The Academy may have to refer books, Beary songs and opinion of resource persons in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Kodagu before beginning the work, said Mr. B.A. Mohammed Haneef, president of the academy.
Usage of both Kannada and English scripts would be explored in bringing out the dictionary, according to Prof. Rai and UP Upadhyaya, a linguist.
“There are Beary speakers in Dubai, who may not know the Kannada script. But almost everyone knows the Roman (English) script. The dictionary will help and others who want to learn the language,” said Mr. Upadhyaya.
He also said that the academy needs to identify dialects in various places and through this, the dictionary can be enriched.
Vasanta Kumar Perla, Kannada poet and radio personality, said that a concerted effort should be made to update the dictionary even after its first print.Courtesy:Karnataka Muslims
