Dhaka, July 11: Bangladesh and Russia are set to ink a key deal for nuclear cooperation, including setting up of an atomic power plant here. A high-level Bangladeshi delegation led by the state minister for Science and Information Communication Technology is scheduled to visit Russia at the end of the month to sign the nuclear cooperation agreement, Bangladesh Today newspaper reported today.
“We have received an invitation recently from the Russian government to visit its different projects,” the Bangladeshi newspaper quoted a top official as saying. “They proposed the visit to be made at the end of the current month,” a senior official in the Ministry of Science and Information Communication Technology told Bangladesh”s private news agency UNB. He said the state minister for Science and ICT himself might lead the delegation on the important mission.
The purpose of the visit is to ink a deal between the two nations and learn about the Russian nuclear-power technology, the official said. As per the plan, the agreement will be signed between the two countries at the state level during the visit to move forward the nuclear-power project in Bangladesh, which has been struggling to meet its massive power shortages.
On May 13, Bangladesh and Russia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Dhaka to enhance cooperation between the two countries aimed at building a 600-1000-megawatt power plant in Bangladesh. As per that agreement, the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) and the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation-Rosatom-will work to push it forward.
