BCCI oppose govt’s move to regulate cricket

New Delhi, August 30:The BCCI seems to have drawn swords with the government for its move to bring the national cricket board under its ambit.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the move by the government was unacceptable and only organisations which receive funds from the government could come under the RTI Act.

“Only organisations taking grant from the government can come under RTI so only federations while BCCI doesn’t,” BCCI spokesperson Rajeev Shukla said outside Parliament here today.

However, former Indian cricketers have backed government’s plan to bring the BCCI under its control.

Former Indian skippers Kapil Dev, Md Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja have all come out in support of the government, saying it would ultimately help cricket grow as a professional sports in the country.

Talking to the reporters here, Kapil said, “BCCI should rather set an example and come under the guidelines of the government.” Another former captain and current Congress MP, Md Azharuddin said the government’s plan to bring BCCI under Right to Information (RTI) act will help cricket become a more transparent sport.

“It will definitely promote professionalism in cricket,” he said.

Jadeja and BJP MP Kirti Azad also supported government’s plan.
