Bathukamma sarees set ablaze, women complain “Not even worth mopping the floor”

Hyderabad: Free distribution of sarees to women above 18 years has started in the entire Telangana on the occasion of Bathukamma festival. Govt. has a plan to distribute 1.04 crore sarees on this occasion.

Govt. has allocated 8000 centers wherein 25 lakh sarees will be distributed on each day.

However, this program got disturbed since at many places these sarees were put on fire complaining of their low quality. In Chelgal of Jaigtial District too women burnt these sarees.

According to the news published in Hindustan Times, a woman complained that the sarees are not even worth using as mopping cloth.

Mr. KTR slammed opposition parties and said that Congress leaders are behind it.

Ms. Shailaja Rama Iyer, Commissioner of Textiles told the media persons that the weavers of Sircilla prepared these polyester sarees which are of 500 designs. She also told that at some places, there were complaints that these saris are below standard.

Principal Secretary of Industries, Mr. Jayesh Ranjan told that the standard of the sarees has not been compromised. About the allegation that the cost of a saree is Rs. 50, he said that it costs Rs. 224 in Sircilla and Rs. 200.
in Surat.
