Basu suffers multi-organ failure, sinking

New Delhi, January 16: CPI-M patriarch Jyoti Basu suffered multi-organ failure on Friday and “is sinking and totally dependent on life support”, an attending doctor said.

“It is a case of multi-organ failure. Three organs–lung, kidney and the haemo dynamic system–have failed and his heart is partially affected. His condition sank earlier, then stabilised. He is sinking again now,” Dr Susruth Banerjee, a doctor on the medical board of AMRI Hospital where Basu was admitted on 1st January with pneumonia, told reporters.

He said the 95-year-old former Chief Minister was now totally dependent on life support. “His kidney is dependent on dialysis, lung on ventilation and haemo dynamic system on medicine.”

He said Basu underwent dialysis for three hours on Friday and would also undergo it on Saturday.

Basu had undergone a two-hour dialysis on Thursday night.

The doctor said his heart was unable to pump blood properly as he had developed Tricaspid-Rejurgitation.

Tricuspid regurgitation is a disorder in which the heart’s tricuspid valve does not close properly, causing blood to flow backward (leak) into the right upper heart chamber (atrium) when the right lower heart chamber (ventricle) contracts.

Basu’s brain and nervous system were also affected partially, Banerjee said.

A medical bulletin earlier issued by D N Agarwal, Executive Director of AMRI Hospital, said Basu’s oxygen requirement was also high.

Ryles tube feed was being continued.

The doctors of the medical board, who were constantly monitoring his condition, would review it at 7:00 pm.

A medical bulletin issued in the evening said “The requirement of ventilation of Basu has increased to a considerable degree and he has gone through a second dialysis.”

It said “his condition has been very critical and his health condition is being monitored closely by the doctors round the clock.
