Kolkata, july 14: The condition of veteran CPM leader Jyoti Basu, who was admitted to hospital on Sunday morning, is stable. The seven-member panel of doctors who have been monitoring his condition for the last 24 hours said that he was doing much better on Monday than when he was admitted.
Basu had been admitted to the AMRI on Sunday after he complained of breathlessness and fainted. Although Basu had a liquid diet on Sunday, doctors said he was given a soft diet of fish and rice on Monday.
Basu also underwent a CT scan on Monday after which his doctors issued a bulletin saying there was “a considerable resolution of the earlier subdural haematoma, which had been detected during the last CT scan in the month of October, 2008”.
The doctors further said that Basu was being monitored continuously and that the doctors were satisfied with his condition. The doctors, meanwhile, said Basu had been suffering from irritable bowel syndrome since morning.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee visited Basu at the hospital on Monday, though he refused to speak to the media about his visit.
Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee also visited Basu in the evening and said: “He is quite alright now. I have spoken to him as he was awake when I visited him. I asked him how he was doing and he replied he was okay. We are all praying that he recovers quickly.”
Basu was also visited by Forward Bloc leaders like Rabin Ghosh and Ashok Ghosh, as well as CPI leader Nandagopal Bhattacharya. Mausam Benazir Noor, MP, Malda North, also came to meet the ailing leader.
“I came to meet him but he was asleep in the afternoon so I could not speak to him. However, I have been told by the doctors that he is doing much better now,” said Noor.
