Cleveland: Basheer Jones becomes the first Muslim to become the Ward 7 Councilman and he represents the historic Hough district, as well as the St. Clair-Superior, Midtown and Asia Town neighborhoods.
According to the information available on the website of Cleveland city council, in 2013, he ran unsuccessfully for city council.
He represents four council committees of Development Planning & Sustainability, Health, Safety and Workforce & Community Benefits.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York and moved to Cleveland when he was in childhood.
Basheer Jones is also well known for his hosting of rallies in Cleveland for Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential elections. He also organised a youth voter registration drive in Cleveland.
He also received “Emerging Leader” award from U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge and the Urban League’s “Distinguished Men” award. Councilman Jones is a member of the NAACP and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Basheer Jones is also the author of a book titled “I’ll Speak for Change.”
