Barmer: Tribal Dalit lynched over affair with Muslim, 2 held

BARMAER: A Dalit man was beaten to death by a group of men on Tuesday in Rajasthan’s Barmer allegedly over an affair with a Muslim woman.

The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Kheta Ram succumbed to severe injuries.

According to SHO Vikram Sandhu of Ramsar police station, Kheta Ram’s family had taken agricultural land on rent from its Muslim owner and was involved in brick-manufacturing business. Kheta Ram allegedly had an affair with a Muslim woman from the family, which warned him to desist but he did not heed.

The FIR was registered against 10 persons, including three women, after the man was lynched on July 21 night.

Two people identified as Anwar and Padhai have been arrested in connection with the incident. Further investigation in the matter is underway.

The accused were sent in judicial custody for seven days by a local court, said Sandhu where the case was registered.

The police officer said the man’s family claimed that he was beaten to death by a mob.

As Khet Ram belonged to the ‘Bheel’ tribe, a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was made out, apart from Sections 147, 148, 149, 365 and 302 of Indian Penal Code.

According to police, the post-mortem report revealed that the deceased was severely beaten and that the attackers also tried to strangulate him.
