Bar Council member resigns

Hyderabad, November 02: Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh member Devanand Battu has resigned to his membership this evening reportedly disturbed over what he described as High Court’s failure in taking action against those who behaved with him rashly while he was entering the High Court premises

on Saturday.

He sent his resignation to the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh on Monday. Advocates on Monday boycotted duties as the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh and High Court Bar Association passed resolutions asking advocates to abstain from duties in protest against the police highhandedness against the Bar Council member.

According to sources, police pushed Devanand away in the presence of joint registrar Ramakrishna while he was entering the High Court premises to attend a disciplinary committee meeting of the Bar Council on Saturday, as he couldn’t produce identity card.

Speaking to Express, Devanand said: ”I told them that I was discharging my statutory duty and needn’t produce identity card. But they pushed me away.’’

Bar Council and the Bar Association demanded action against police, joint registrar besides doing away the system of police giving clearance to advocates to enter High Court.

”I resigned because I was disturbed by the way Bar Council responded to the issue. The high court failed to respond even after 48 hours,’’ Devanand said.

When contacted High Court Bar Association president B Prakash Reddy said: ”Today we convened extra-ordinary general body meeting in which executive committee endorsed our resolution. We will take a decision whether to attend courts or not at tomorrow’s meeting.’’
