Banks told to achieve credit target for minorities

Hyderabad, September 29 (Siasat News): Expressing his concern over poor performance of banks for providing credit to minorities in State-Level Bankers Committee meeting, chief minister Mr. K Rosaiah pointed out that the priority sector lending to minorities was (9800 crore) 7.43% till June 2010 against the mandatory 15% share. He said two important affairs under the prime minister’s 15-point programme for the welfare of minorities are regarding banks.

One is setting up of branches at places predominantly inhabited by minority communities the other is reaching the target of 15 percent credit to minorities under priority sector. Indian government has identified 19 towns in the state as the cities predominantly inhabited by minority communities.

He inquired regarding the progress made in setting up of branches. Chief Minister said credit plan for minorities was discussed in the last meeting of SLBC and banks were advised to take action plan to do away with the flaws.

He said that AP had got a prominent place in achieving targets of annual credit plans except in the year 2008-09 but credit target for minorities and other backward communities such as SCs and SCs should be achieved without fail.
