Bangladesh to allow Indian goods trains till Dhaka

Dhaka, December 23: Bangladesh has agreed to allow Indian container trains to carry goods and raw materials up to Gazipur on the outskirts of the capital, which would benefit traders of both countries and lower transportation cost.

The preparation is almost complete and they are working round-the-clock for the operation of Indian container trains, Belayet Hossain, Director General of Bangladesh Railway was quoted as saying by the ‘New Age’.

India has been requesting since 2007 to allow container trains, that carry goods worth USD 2 billion, close to the capital crossing the Jamuna Bridge but Bangladesh denied permission citing cracks that developed on the pool.

The communications ministry has now found that vehicular movement on the bridge at a low speed would not harm it. “The Bangladesh Railway will monitor the speed,” communications minister Abul Hossain was quoted as saying by the paper.
