Bangalore blasts: Cops seeking legal opinion on Madani

Bangalore, June 08: The Bangalore police is considering legal opinion to proceed against Abdul Nasser Madani, former Islamic Sevak Sangh head and current leader of the People’s Democratic Party, an ally of ruling CPM in Kerala, in connection with the July 2008 Bangalore serial blasts case that killed one person, Commissioner of Police Shankar Bidari said Monday.

Madani, a former radical who was exonerated in the Coimbatore blasts case of 1998, and his wife Soofiya are said to have played inspirational roles in the July 2008 serial blasts carried out by Tadiyandavede Nasir, a former close aide of Madani, and over a dozen youths with financial assistance from a Gulf-based unit of the Lashkar-e-Toiba.

There has been little evidence to link the Madanis to the Bangalore blasts except for a phone call made by Nasir to Soofiya soon after the blasts. Sources said they are examining new evidence of links between Madani and other conspirators.

A chargesheet was filed in the blasts case over a year ago but the names of the Madanis did not figure in it as wanted persons. Sources said an additional chargesheet is likely to be placed in court on the basis of new evidence against them.

The Bangalore police had earlier sent notices to Madani seeking to interrogate him in Bangalore but the PDP leader had cited poor health and had chosen not to travel for interrogation.

A total of 15 people from Kerala have been nabbed in connection with the Bangalore blasts. Among the Indians accused in the case who are still at large are the Indian Mujahideen co-founder Riyaz Bhatkal, his associate Ibrahim Moulvi and Ummar Farooq, a close aide of Nasir.
