Bangalore often referred to as India’s ‘ suicide Capital’, Bangalore lived up to the infamous sobriquet with 11 people, including five women and two girls, committing suicide on Friday.
This is a dubious record for the city as it saw so many people committing suicide on the same day for different reasons.
Revathi, 15, hanged herself because she was finding it difficult to learn English. Kokila, 14, committed suicide because of some health issue.
All the five women who committed suicide were facing family problems or marital discord.
Four of them hanged themselves to death while the fifth committed self- immolation.
Vijayalakshmi, 34; Rathna, 45; Anandi, 21; Reshma, 22, and Sunanda, 26, who committed were all going through troubled marriages, according to the police.
The others, who committed suicide, include Raja, 27; Manikya, 70; Praveen, 36, and Sampangi, 30. Other than Praveen, the remaining three hailed from lower middle class families and shanty towns. All the 11 suicides took place between 3 pm and 11: 45 pm on Friday.
In 2011, as many as seven people had killed themselves on the same side. But this is the first time that the number of suicide incidents in a day has crossed the double digit.
Bangalore has been topping the number of suicide cases reported every year. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, in 2010, the number of suicides reported from Bangalore was 1,778 and it has been growing. The Bangalore police reported that the number of suicides has always been over 2,000 since 2011.
“ In the last three years, domestic problems, such as marital discord, disputes and health issues have emerged as the major reasons for people resorting to suicide. Also, we are seeing suicides of higher proportion among lower middle class families,” said a Bangalore City Police officer.
