Thiruvananthapuram, December 20: Ban on private practice of government doctors was a major step towards ensuring quality service to people from the public health system, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said today.
Doctors in medical colleges were expected to concentrate on teaching, research and giving treatment to people depending on hospitals attached to them, he said inaugurating Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Government Dental College here.
While ending the private practice, the government had steeply increased the pay and allowances of the doctors. They were expected to reciprocate the gesture by providing high quality services to people, he said.
As in other sectors, commercialisation was posing a big problem in medical services. Doctors and students in medical institutions had a vital role to play in rooting out such undesirable tendencies afflicting healthcare system, he said.
