Hyderabad Metro Rail Authority took a decision changing the name of Balanagar as Ambedkar Metro Station here on Thursday. HMR director Shivanand Nimbargi issued orders in this regard following appeals from the Dalit Ikya Vedika and several other peoples unions.
The HMR authorities also clarified on name change that the present station was three-and-a-half kilometers away from Balanagar and the decision of name changing was taken only to avoid confusion in future when Metro project was widened.
GHMC issues notification
Meanwhile, the GHMC also issued a notification changing the name of Balangar Metro Rail Station to Dr BR Ambedkar Junction Metro Rail Station. Taking into consideration the representations made by various social groups, the decision has been taken by the GHMC, an official release said.
The Metro Rail station adjacent to the Y-Junction has been named after Dr. BR Ambedkar as the place is well know for the statue of the architect of Indian Constitution. Every year, on April 14 Ambedkar’s Jayanthi celebrated at Y-Junction in a big way. On December 6, people pay tributes to Ambedkar by garlanding the statue to mark his death anniversary. So, now the name of the Balanagar Metro Rail station is officially Ambedkar Junction Metro Rail station. (NSS)
