New Delhi, June 02: Former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan is likely to be appointed as Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission with a Parliamentary committee clearing his name for the prestigious post.
Sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs said that the high-level committee headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recommended the name of the former CJI for his appointment as the NHRC Chairperson in its meeting yesterday.
However, the file recommending appointment of Balakrishnan as NHRC Chairperson is yet to be sent to the President for her clearance, sources in the ministry said.
“It is expected to be sent to the President for her approval in a day or two,” they said.
As per Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the Chairperson of the Commission shall be appointed by the President “by warrant under his hand and seal”.
