Manama, June 03: The head of Foreign Relations Office of Bahrain Center for Human Rights says people in Bahrain will continue their protests after the regime ended the emergency rule.
In an interview with Media, Maryam al-Khawaja said it is very clear that Bahraini protesters will go out into the streets to press their demands for reforms in the Persian Gulf island nation, and persevere until the fulfillment of their demands.
On Wednesday, Bahrain lifted the state of emergency it imposed during anti-regime protests in the Middle Eastern country in mid-March.
Khawaja expressed hope for a change in the Bahraini government policy and a transformation of the status quo.
“But this is just a replay of what happened on the 14th of February,” she went on to say.
The activist pointed out that it was on that day when people came out to the streets in several villages, they were violently attacked by security forces, and “that’s exactly what we saw again yesterday and today.”
“There were mass layoffs, people being arrested and tortured, and people dying under torture in prisons,” she further explained.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International has called for an end to “the continuing harassment of human rights activists in Bahrain.”
The rights group condemned summoning and questioning of several Bahraini rights activists by military prosecutors and said that the moves were gross violations of international human rights standards.
