Manama, April 14: Bahrainis mourn another victim of the Al Khalifa regime’s brutal crackdown on the opposition, the fourth such fatality in less than two weeks.
On Wednesday, the people were mourning the death of the 49-year-old businessman, Abdul Kareem al-Fakhrawi, who died the previous day after being severely tortured in prison, al-Manar quoted the opposition Al-Wefaq group as saying.
Fakhrawi disappeared on or around April 4, when he went to file a complaint against policemen who had earlier raided his home, reports said.
Another victim, Zakria Rashid al-Asherri, 40, was arrested on April 2 and died in police custody on Saturday.
Ali Isa Saqer, 31, was also killed after security forces used violence to subdue him.
The first case of detainee death in Bahrain goes back to April 3, when Hassan Jassim Maki, 39, was found dead inside his prison cell.
The Bahrain Ministry of Interior has not confirmed the deaths or commented on the circumstances of the incidents.
The fatalities come at a time of a severe security crackdown by the Bahraini forces backed by troops from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait.
Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) are among the international rights groups which have criticized the Bahraini government’s deadly crackdown on its own people.
