Bahrain fires hundreds of strike workers

Manama, April 05: The Bahraini government has reportedly fired more than 250 workers for taking part in the country’s general strikes which were planned for solidarity with anti-government protesters.

The General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU), Bahrain’s main trade union body, said on Monday that workers of companies such as Alba, Bapco, APM terminal, Batelco and other private enterprises have been dismissed by Bahraini authorities during the past few days.

GFBTU called for a nationwide strike first on February 20 and then from March 13 to 22 in protest to the continued crackdown on anti-government demonstrators in the tiny Persian Gulf littoral state.

“We request immediate intervention of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to end this crisis. Political solution at this stage will stop these job cuts to ensure workers are not affected,” GFBTU secretary-general Salman Mahfoodh told Xinhua.

More than 25 people have been killed and thousands more injured in the government-authorized violence in Bahrain since February 14, when the public started a popular revolution against the monarchy, which has been ruling the tiny island for more than 200 years.

In March, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait also deployed their troops to Bahrain to reinforce the armed attacks.
