Bad publicity eclipses cops sacrifice

Hyderabad, July 01: “Police force is an instrument of social change. An understanding of the local problems and a sincere effort towards change will earn the respect of the public,” said K Aravinda Rao, director general of police (DGP), Andhra Pradesh, who retired from service on Thursday.

The police personnel turned up in their ceremonial best for the DGP’s farewell parade at the Amberpet police grounds here.

Touching on the issue of adverse publicity the force is subject to, he said the sacrifice made by the police personnel goes unnoticed as the public-police interaction is usually unpleasent.

“The organization has to reach out to the public through various programs, like forming ‘Maitri Committees’ involving the public in discussions on curbing local problems. Such experiments will highlight the efforts of the force,” suggested Aravinda Rao.?

Talking about his 34 years of experience in the department, he said the cooperation and suggestions from his juniors had helped him run the department to his best capacity.”AP has experienced many unique law and order situations, including acts of terror and naxal offensive. Police personnel, right from constables, to greyhounds and special task force, the effort has been to cause minimum collateral damage,” the DGP said.
