After the unseasonal rains wreaked havoc on mango harvesting, the middlemen and the traders, who formed a syndicate, are making the life of farmers miserable by stripping them of whatever benefit left. The production loss caused by recent unseasonal rain will have an effect on the pricing of king of the fruits.
According to preliminary estimates mangoes this summer would surely cost people a lot more. Even the lower end of the varieties are expected to be around Rs 100 a kg in the retail market while the price of premium varieties such as Alphonso will be anywhere between Rs 500 and 600 per dozen in Mumbai.
The two Telugu-speaking States – AP and Telangana, along with few other states which account for about two-third share of the country’s total mango production saw an adverse impact on the productin. According to Agri-business council of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), the prices of the fruit will shoot up by 50 to 65 per cent due to the holdup of 50 per cent mango arrivals into the market. .
