Baby-swap at Malakpet hospital

Hyderabad, December 17: A mistake by staff of government area hospital at Malakpet led to a commotion with two women fighting for a male baby.

Two infants, a male and another female, were born in a gap of half-an-hour in the hospital and the nurses reportedly handed them over to wrong mothers leading to commotion. One of the woman, Sabiha Begum of Moosarambagh, delivered a female child today while another woman, Najma of Karmanghat, delivered a male baby.

“However, while handing over the babies, Sabiha was given the male child and Najma the female one,’’ Chaderghat SI Riyazuddin said. Sabiha’s family began celebrating the birth of a male baby when the staff approached them asking them to return the infant and explained them about their mistake.

“Sabiha was reluctant to return the male baby and at the same time Najma insisted that her male baby should be restored to her,” Riyazuddin said. With both groups being adamant, police shifted the babies to Niloufer hosptial for taking samples to perform a DNA test. The samples would be sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Niloufer hospital authorities advised that the babies should be shifted to Malakpet hospital as they might contract infection if kept there. Najma was handed over the male child and Sabitha the female.

We took an understanding from them that they would abide by the FSL report and be ready to hand over the baby to the other woman if the hospital records were proved wrong, Riyazuddin said.
