The girl, who was born last year in March was playing inside her home during a pellet firing incident in Shopian district of South Kashmir on November 25. The toddler was in her mother’s arms when the volley of pellets hit her and bleeding profusely after she was hit by the pellets on her right eye and was immediately rushed to a hospital.

Since then Hiba, which translates into ‘gift from God’ in Arabic, has undergone a surgery at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital as she had suffered corneal perforation due to the pellet injury.

“She has suffered a corneal injury. We are trying to restore her eyesight but it is a long procedure and will take multiple surgeries. Her second surgery is scheduled for December 11,” a senior doctor at SMHS Hospital where Hiba is being treated currently was quoted as saying to The Tribune.

Nisar, Hiba’s father works as a farm labourer, helping pack apples for orchard owners in season.

Hiba has already caught people’s attention after the toddler’s photograph with her right eye bandaged widely shared on social media platforms with many activists reiterating demanding the ban of pellet gun us age during law and order situations.
