Ras Al Khaimah, April 26: An infant was found abandoned near a mosque on the Al Kuwait Hospital Street in Ras Al Khaimah, police confirmed here on Monday.
Residents called the police on Sunday evening after finding the baby boy near a mosque. ‘‘He was crying,’’ said Major Marwan Jikka Al Mansouri, head of the Public Relations and Moral Guidance Department at the RAK Police.
The baby, suspected to belong to Asian parents was thought to be a few weeks old and was taken to Saqr Hospital for medical tests. “The boy will be kept there until his parents are found,” said Al Mansouri.
According to the police, the baby had been abandoned a few hours earlier that evening before residents found him.
Doctors attending to the boy said he was in a good condition.
Major Al Mansouri said that the police had begun their investigations to find the boy’s parents since no one had yet come forward to claim the baby since Sunday. He urged the public to provide information to the RAK Police to help them with the probe.
Police in Umm Al Quwain last month found a newborn baby wrapped in a bag at Ramla village. Also last month, the UAQ Hospital handed over three children of unknown parents to a social childcare centre of the Department of Social Services in Sharjah.
Last year, 10 such cases were reported from across the UAE. Police statistics show 154 kids were dumped by their parents from 2004-2009
