Babli sluice gates reopened after eight months

The sluice gates of the controversial Babli project in Maharashtra were reopened on Tuesday after eight months.

When the Maharashtra government constructed the Babli project unilaterally, the united Andhra Pradesh government had approached the Supreme Court to stop construction of the project. After hearing the AP plea, the court passed orders directing the Maharashtra government to shut the sluice gates of the project from October 29 to June 30 every year and reopen the gates on July 1 till October 28 in order to ensure that there was no hindrance to the flow of river water.

In compliance of the court order, the Maharashtra government reopened the Babli gates on Tuesday morning in the presence of Irrigation officials of the Maharashtra and Telangana governments. The gates of the project will be shut again on October 28 as per the orders of the Supreme Court.
