Azharuddin likely to be Congress Candidate for GHMC Mayor’s post

Hyderabad: Congress Party has decided to float Mr. Mohammed Azharuddin, Former Cricket Captain for the post of Mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Congress High Command has already communicated this decision to the State leadership and instructed Mr. Azharuddin to take part actively in Hyderabad politics.

It may be noted that Mr. Azharuddin has been staying in Hyderabad for quiet sometime. He would be asked to contest as Municipal Corporator from Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills or Panjagutta Municipal Divisions. There is no direct election for the mayor’s post. Only the elected Municipal Corporators have to elect the Mayor. Azharuddin is a Congress leader. He was Congress MP from Muradabad Parliamentary Constituency earlier. In the last elections, he contested from Tonk Parliamentary Constituency in Rajasthan on Congress ticket but lost. If Azharuddin does not give his consent for it, former minister, Mr. Mukesh could be nominated for Mayor’s post. However, there is no likelihood of Congress winning the election in GHMC polls. According to a survey conducted, Congress may get 15-17 seats only.
