Azhar bats for sports in maiden Parliament speech

New Delhi, July 14: Former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin delivered his first speech in the Parliament on Tuesday. The Moradabad MP hit out against the monopoly prevailing in certain sports federations like in the field of hockey.

“There are some sports with so much of monopoly in them, that people stay there for years and years and then nothing happens. Once these things happen, I think the country will never go forward and I think the people who suffer are the sports persons. I am in favour of independent bodies but at the same time, somebody should look after them if they are faltering anytime,” said the former cricketer turned Parliamentarian.

Azharuddin has been voted to the Parliament from the Moradabad seat of Uttar Pradesh as a Congress candidate for the first time. He had been a celebrated cricketer who slammed three consecutive centuries in the very first test matches he had played for the country. He last played for India in 2000.
