Azad warns medical colleges on ‘brokers’

New Delhi, March 24: In a bid to check middlemen and brokers promising recognition to medical colleges, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has written to medical colleges that admission of new batches could be debarred if they are found entertaining such people.

According to officials, the letter, which is posted on the website of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, was sent out last week after receiving queries from medical and dental colleges about the proximity of such people with Azad.

“People claiming to be close to the Minister were approaching the medical colleges and promising them recognition/approval. The Minister took cognizance of this and sent out about 600 letters to medical colleges, making it clear that he has not authorised anybody to approach medical colleges on his behalf for such permissions,” said an official.

Azad has also posted on the ministry website his personal email address along with the residence numbers and office numbers where complaints can be registered in this regard.

Reiterating that he wants to maintain transparency in the functioning of the Ministry, Azad, in his letter, has also warned of strict action against medical college if these people are entertained by them. “If any college authority entertains such middlemen or broker, it will be viewed seriously and I would not hesitate to take stringent action including withdrawal of recognition/barring from admitting a new batch of students for a year or two,” says the letter.
