Azaan row: Pooja Bhatt shuts Sonu Nigam with a tweet

MUMBAI: Singer Sonu Nigam received flak after he described the use of loudspeakers for ‘Azaan’ as hooliganism or ‘gundagardi’.

His insensitive statement over Azaan and “forced religiousness” didn’t go well with many celebrities including Pooja Bhatt, who called ‘church bells & the Azaan’ the ‘spirit of India’.

The filmmaker turned actor who is known for voicing her thoughts fearlessly posted a tweet saying, “I wake each morning to the sound of church bells & the Azaan in a quiet by-lane of Bandra. I light an aggarbatti & salute the spirit of India.”

While critisising heavily, the 43-year-old singer defended himself and said ‘[Holy Prophet] Mohammed [PBUH] did not have electricity when he made Islam… Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?’ and calling it ‘Gundagardi’ (hooliganism).
