Hyderabad, April 04: The Transport department is planning to set up a state of theart automated fitness testing station in the city and later extend the facility to all the districts in the state.
The fully automated vehicle fitness certification centre will monitor the fitness of all transport and nontransport vehicles. The Centre recently sanctioned `15 crore to the state government for setting up these testing centres.
Speaking to Express, Transport department officials said all transport vehicles have to undergo fitness tests every year, except new vehicles. Presently, fitness test of vehicles is done manually. There was a need therefore, for professional testing to ensure better road safety, according to officials.
Officials added that with funds received from the Centre, the department was looking to procure land for setting up the project in the city. Since it is necessary to set up such stations in each district, the department has requested the government for implementing the project through the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).
Officials said as per the Motor Vehicles Act, all transport vehicles including trucks, cabs and buses have to obtain fitness certificates from the regional transport offices. Once the new vehicle testing centres are established, vehicles will undergo 30 to 40 different tests through specialised equipment to check brakes, headlights, pollution levels among others. The objective is to make the tests more scientific and curb pollution emission levels, said officials.
They said most road accidents occurred due to unfit nature of the vehicles. The automated system would be able to scan all parts of the vehicle and bring the defects to light.
