Auto sales accelerate, no cruising yet

The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Tuesday reported 33.5 per cent increase in total sales for June at 1,12,773 units as against 84,455 units in the same month last year.

The company said domestic sales rose 31.1 per cent during the month to 1,00,964 units as against 77,002 units in June 2013. Sales of mini-segment cars, including M800, Alto, A-Star and WagonR, rose by 52.1 per cent to 47,618 units as compared to 31,314 units in the year-ago month, MSI said. The company said sales of the compact segment comprising Swift, Estilo, Ritz rose by 6.2 per cent to 22,293 units in June this year as against 20,996 units in the same month a year ago.

MSI said sales of its popular compact sedan Dzire rose by 27.4 per cent during the month under review at 15,990 units as against 12548 units in June 2013.

Sales of the company’s midsized sedan SX4 rose 2.5 per cent to 322 units in June as against 314 units in the same month last year. There was no sale of premium sedan Kizashi during the month.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported 2.97 per cent decline in total sales at 13,394 units in June 2014. The company had sold 13,805 units in the corresponding month of previous year, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said.

In the domestic market, TKM sold 12,010 units in June 2014, a growth of 9 per cent as compared to 11,010 units in June 2013. During the month, the company exported 1,384 units of the Etios.

Commenting on the sales performance, N Raja, Senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing), said the newly launched Corolla Altis and Etios Cross have been well accepted by the customers. “We received more than 5,400 total booking orders for Etios Cross and more than 3,000 for Corolla Altis,” he added.

The Indian subsidiary of Japanese automobile firm Nissan Motor Company last month recorded a 48 per cent growth in sales over the like period of last year, the company said.

Nissan Motor India said it sold 4,362 vehicles last month up from 2,949 units sold in June 2013.

Honda Cars India reported 75 per cent increase in domestic sales at 16,316 units in June. It had sold 9,297 units in June last year, Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) said in a statement. During June this year, the company sold 1,438 units of its small car Brio, 7,075 units of sedan Amaze and 7,723 units of the premium sedan City.

Besides, it sold 80 units of sports utility vehicle CRV. In addition, the company exported a total of 739 units during the month. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) had sold 38,092 units in the same month last year, the company said.

M&M’s domestic sales also rose marginally at 36,457 units last month as against 36,207 a year earlier. Sales of passenger vehicles, including Scorpio, XUV 5OO, Xylo, Bolero and Verito, stood at 16,780 units compared with 17,232 units in June 2013, down 3 per cent.PTI
