Auto rickshaw strike set to affect commuting in Mumbai today

Mumbai: The residents of Mumbai will find commuting slightly difficult today, with the city’s auto rickshaw union having called for a strike in protest against Regional Transport Office’s (RTO) decision to raise renewal charges for auto and taxi permits.

The strike, which has been called by Mumbai Auto Rickshaw Taximen’s Union, is likely to have a big impact of suburban Mumbai, as city’s taxi drivers are also set to join the strike.

According to reports, the government has raised the cost of permits to Rs 15,000. The Auto Drivers’ union allege that the cost of renewal of permit has also been raised.

The union has demanded that cab aggregators should be banned, besides taking action against vehicles who are involved in unauthorized ferrying of passengers.

They have also demanded that auto rickshaw drivers and owners be given recognition of “public servant”. (ANI)
