Auto fare set to rise in Capital

New Delhi, June 18: Auto-Rickshaw ride in the Capital could become costlier from next week, the Sheila Dikshit government has indicated.

The government’s reported decision comes as auto drivers threatened to go on strike on Monday, citing losses because of an increase in CNG price.

The government has prepared a proposal to increase the fare that will come up for approval on Monday, senior officials said.

The existing base fare of Rs 10 for the first 2 km is likely to be raised to between Rs 15 and Rs 20, according to the three proposed slabs prepared by the transport officials.

Travellers who now pay Rs 4.5 for every subsequent km after the first may have to shell out up to 60 per cent more, transport officials said.

“ We have prepared three possible fare structures and the cabinet will approve one of them when the proposal is taken up for consideration on Monday,” a transport official said.
