Mumbai, November 03: A traffic police constable, who was set on fire by an enraged auto rickshaw driver after the policeman booked him for violating traffic rules, died in the wee hours Wednesday.
Anil Aitodekar, the traffic constable, had taken action against the 22-year-old auto rickshaw driver Mahendra Kevat for not following traffic norms in Vasai in neighbouring Thane district.
Enraged over this, Kevat went to the constable later and poured kerosene and set him ablaze on the road.
Shortly after the incident the victim, who sustained 50% burns, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries this morning.
Police later arrested Mahendra Kevat from Keravali area in Vasai and he was remanded in police custody for six days.
The accused was charged with IPC sections 307 (Attempt to murder), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty).
