Australian High Commission to present solo exhibition titled “Dust” in Delhi

The Palette Art Gallery in association with The Australian High Commission is proud to present Dust, a solo exhibition of works by one of India’s leading contemporary artists, Gigi Scaria.

Scaria conceived the exhibition after embarking on a cultural exchange program in Australia in 2012 as a Macgeorge Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

The artist drew inspiration from Australia’s vast, open landscapes. The exhibition explores the geographical diversity of India and reveals the powerful connections between the Australian and Indian continents.

Through a series of new video works, photographs and painting, the show presents stunning large-scale images of salt lakes and expanses of desert shot in Kutch and Jaisalmer.

“Even though you feel like you are in the middle of an ocean, you stand solid and supported in the salt,” Scaria said.

“There is a fear and fascination on being an outsider but the vastness is also oddly comforting. There is a stoicism about the place.”

Curated by Bala Starr, former senior curator at the Potter museum, the title Dust takes its inspiration from a city consumed by the desert. It forewarns of the cyclical relationship of humanity and nature, as well as the ebb and flow of creation and destruction over time.

Dust will open in Delhi on February 1, 2014 at Palette Art Gallery, 14 Golf Links. The exhibition will run until March 15.

It is being exhibited simultaneously at the Ian Potter Museum of Art in Melbourne, Australia, until March 9, 2014. (ANI)
