Australia: First same sex marriage ended in 48 days only

Melbourne: Australia’s first gay marriage could only last for 48 days, ended with the death of terminally ill partner heard the Queensland State Parliament today.

Jo Grant married her eight years long time partner Jill Kindt privately on 15 December in the garden of their home in Australia in less than a week after the country made gay marriages legal in Australia.

The news was released after the family members have given the permission to make the news public. The couple was granted an exception to avoid 30 day waiting period to become Australia’s first same-sex married couple after the marriage equality laws were passed in the state on Dec. 9.

“Jo and Jill were approved, married, and registered all in one day after the registrar ruled exceptional circumstances,” Queensland Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath told parliament.

“Jo’s mum Sandra believes the marriage renewed Jo’s spirit, keeping her alive long enough to have one last Christmas with her family.”

Grant, was suffering from a terminally ill disease, a rare form of cancer, died on January 30 Channel News Asia reported.
