Wellington: Australia ended New Zealand’s 13-match unbeaten streak at home with a crushing innings and 52-run victory in the opening Test of the two-match series in Wellington on Monday.
New Zealand could last only an hour after lunch on day dour at the Basin Reserve before they were bundled out for 327 in their second innings. Opener Tom Latham was the top-scorer for his side with 63, Stuff.co.nz reported.
Spinner Nathan Lyon was the pick of Australia’s bowlers with 4 for 91, while all-rounder Mitchell Marsh finished with figures of 3-73.
The hosts faced a huge deficit of 379 runs after being dismissed for 183 in their first innings.
Earlier, Australian veteran batsman Adam Voges, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, scored his second Test double century to propel his side to a mammoth 562.
Australia can overtake India at the top of the world Test rankings if they manage to secure a draw in the second match, which starts at Christchurch on Saturday. (ANI)
